My First Marathon.
I just completed my first marathon at the “Rock n Roll Running Series” in Nashville, Tennessee.
Here are five life lessons that really stuck with me after doing this
1. To achieve something BIG, you have to go where 98% of people are unwilling to go.
That’s right: Only 2% of the world’s population EVER LEAVES their comfort zone. Are you part of the 98% or the 2%? Whether you’re preparing for a physical challenge, starting a business, or stepping into leadership, it takes courage and consistent action to move into that top 2%. As a CEO Coach and Life Coach, I’ve seen firsthand how this mindset transforms performance — in running and in life.
2. Attention to detail matters.
Being my first marathon, I didn’t focus enough on the small things — like nutrition. (Yes, I had a burger and fries the night before, and the hotel restaurant was unexpectedly closed for breakfast). My running satchel broke after 2 miles, and I spilled gel all over my phone. Small missteps added up fast. The same goes for leadership and personal growth. As an Executive Coach, I always say: The micro choices affect the macro results. The small stuff is the big stuff.
3. Connection and Support.
The support during the first 10 miles was incredible — the crowd, the vibe, the atmosphere. Then silence. No music, no running buddy, no noise. I realized how important connection is. Whether you're a runner, a business leader, or someone pushing through burnout, we all need backup. My friend Brittany rejoined me at mile 21. She saw me at my worst and pulled me through the finish line. She was my Marathon Winner. This is why, as a Burnout Coach, I champion having the right support system — you don’t have to do it alone.
4. Where the Mind Goes, Energy Flows.
Whether your focus is on sport, relationships, work, or your next big idea — that’s where your energy will land. During those final miles, all I could think about was getting over the line and seeing my two kids and husband, Pierce — the most important people in my world. They trained with me in their own way: packing bags, cheering from the sidelines, and being my why. As a Business Coach, I help clients align their energy with what matters most so they can show up fully — without sacrificing their wellbeing.
5. No Regrets.
If there's something on your bucket list, set a deadline. Then, do ONE thing today to bring it to life. Put on your runners. Make the call. Send the CV. Book the appointment. Ask for feedback. Take the first small step. Whether you’re battling stress, working on performance, or building a new life chapter — progress starts now.
A big shout-out to the @runrocknroll series organizers for putting together such a fantastic event. It was an absolute pleasure (with some pain!). Thank you.
