Employer-funded coaching

Is executive coaching confidential when your employer pays?

When an employer pays for coaching, what it receives should be defined rather than assumed.

The exact confidentiality terms depend on the engagement. Before coaching begins, the client, coach and sponsor should agree in writing what, if anything, may be shared.

The client, coach and sponsor should understand the boundaries before coaching begins.

Payment and privacy

A sponsor can fund the work without becoming part of every conversation

An organization may need practical information to consider or arrange coaching. That is different from knowing the private detail discussed in a session.

The approval conversation may cover the coaching structure, timeline, investment and agreed confidentiality boundaries. Pricing on the call.

The coaching itself needs enough privacy for the client to think honestly about the decisions, relationships and patterns affecting her work.

Agree boundaries early

Do not leave confidentiality to assumption

Before coaching begins, ask for a clear explanation of:

  • who is being coached
  • who is paying
  • what practical information the sponsor receives
  • what remains private
  • whether any check-in is expected
  • who can answer questions about the arrangement

The answers should reflect the actual agreement. Do not assume that one employer’s process will be the same as another’s.

Sponsor summary

Enough information to make a decision

A manager, HR partner or budget owner may need a concise summary before approving coaching. Contact me to discuss the proposed structure, timeline, investment and confidentiality questions relevant to the request.

The aim is to give a sponsor practical information while making clear whether any coaching information will be reported.

For the person being coached

Questions to ask before you begin

  • Who will know that I am receiving coaching?
  • What information, if any, will be shared with my employer?
  • Will anyone receive updates during the engagement?
  • If a sponsor asks about a session, how will that request be handled?
  • Where are the agreed boundaries recorded?

You should be able to understand the answers before deciding whether the arrangement feels right.

For the sponsor

Make the purpose and limits clear

  • What practical information will we receive?
  • How will confidentiality be explained to the client?
  • What is outside the sponsor’s access?
  • Who should we contact about logistics, payment or approval?
  • Does the proposed format fit the situation we are trying to support?

The sponsor does not need private session detail to ask good questions about the structure of the work.

Claire’s commitment

Private conversation within agreed boundaries

My role is to coach the client. The organization may fund the work, but the client remains at the centre of it.

Contact me to discuss the practical information available for internal approval and arrangement. The confidentiality terms, including what may be shared, should be explicitly agreed for the engagement.

If you are unsure how that would work in your situation, ask before the engagement begins. For website and contact data, see the website privacy policy.

Questions

Confidentiality FAQs

If my employer pays, will my manager know what I say in coaching?
Confidentiality depends on the terms agreed for the engagement. Ask for those boundaries, including what may be shared with a sponsor, to be clear in writing before coaching begins.
What information does an employer receive?
An employer may ask about structure, timeline, investment and confidentiality. Contact Claire to discuss what information is available; do not assume that private session detail is included or excluded without an agreement.
Should the confidentiality boundaries be recorded?
The boundaries should be clearly recorded and understood before coaching begins. Ask what document or agreement applies to your engagement.
Is coaching confidentiality the same as the website privacy policy?
No. The website privacy policy explains how website and contact data are handled. Coaching confidentiality concerns what is and is not shared about the coaching engagement.
What does employer-funded coaching cost?
Pricing on the call.
